Admit it, there are points in our lives where we needed to glam up for special occasions, and that includes swiping some nail polish. Since a trip to the salon can be pricey and time-consuming, we should be able to apply some polish all by ourselves. It can be quite tedious at first, but we’ll give you a lowdown on nail application for an amazing mani-pedi time.

Start off with a clean hands, feet, and nails

Before you start applying the nail polish, make sure your hands and feet are clean. After drying them, try using a nail file to shape and even out your nails. Move the nail file from the corner toward the center, moving in one direction. Most people move the file back and forth across their nails, thus causing damage your tips.

Paint your nails using your non-dominant hand first

According to beautylish.com, try painting your nails using your non-dominant hand first. If you’re right-handed, use the left hand to paint the right hand first. When you use your non-dominant with freshly painted nails, you're more likely to cause a smudge. To do this, make sure that your hands are firm on a flat surface for stability and to give you more control.

Lastly, make sure you have a nail polish remover ready just in case you smudge over your cuticles.

Start with base coat

To make your nail polish last longer, start with the base coat. It gives your nails a smooth surface for polish, and helps the nails to be firm. Base coats also keeps colored polish acts as an adhesive to your nails and the paint. In addition, it prevent the nails from breaking and peeling.

Apply with care

You can get pretty overwhelmed as soon as you open the bottle – but take note of this: as you pull the brush out of the bottle, wipe one side clean on the edge of the bottle and lightly tap excess polish from the other side of the brush. In one smooth motion, move the brush across the center of the nail, from cuticle to tip. Then, swipe it along the left and right sides. To increase the vibrancy of the color, apply one or two more coats and you’re good to go.
